The AXA Art Prize 2020 - Art in difficult and uncertain times

Different names, same commitment: Our involvement in supporting the arts community began in the early 2000s in the U.K. and Ireland with the Catlin Art Prize; later iterations included the XL Innovate Art Exhibition (in Ireland) and the XL Catlin Art Prize. Building on this legacy, the AXA Art Prize, launched in the U.S. in 2018, has since become known as an excellent platform for highlighting figurative art and the emerging young artists leading its resurgence.

The AXA Art Prize 2019: Spotlighting figurative art and promoting emerging talent

For decades, critics have deemed figurative art as passé if not irrelevant, citing any number of milestones as evidence: The Industrial Revolution, the advent of Cubism, the ascendance of Abstract Impressionism, the deaths of Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon …. But, per Mark Twain’s well-worn riposte, reports of figurative art’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Today, figurative art still serves as a powerful medium for creating narratives around enduring questions of identity and our place in the world; explorations not at all unlike when humans first started painting on cave walls 40,000 years ago.

Re-emphasizing storytelling in American Art

Art and artists evolve, introducing new movements through differing approaches. One such movement is figurative art. According to the Tate Gallery, figurative art is any form of modern art that retains strong references to the real world and particularly to the human figure. The term has been particularly used since the arrival of abstract art to refer to artists that retain aspects of the real world as their subject matter.
